Invictus Film - sport meets politics

Hey all, hope you;re well.

Rich and I went to see Invictus last night - if you don't know about it, it's the story of Nelson Mandela and how the Rugby World cup's South Africa team sought to bring together the new 'Rainbow nation' after the end of Apartheid.

Here's a trailer for you, if you haven't already seen it:

Rich and I were both pretty impressed, esp. with Morgan Freeman's portrayl of Nelson Mandela, and Matt Damon in a very understated, but very powerfully performed Francois Pienaar. A good, uplifting and thought-provoking film all round we thought!

It sounds like it could be a really interesting film, Oola. OH and I decided not to go as we don't like sport, but if there is enough context in it then that would change our minds. I lived in South Africa when the rugby teams and spectators were 'whites-only', and football (soccer as it was there) was the game for the anti-apartheid rallies. It is interesting, and good, that the Springbok teams for both are now mixed. That must have taken some work behind the scenes to organise and agree, as sport, unlike music, was one of the last bastions of social apartheid.

I am sorry that we missed Nowhere Boy due to the weather, but at least now it is sunnier so we can get out ad about to the cinema more.
