This year I would like to make a "green" fly trap, because somehow flies just use my house as a tunnel and then land into my lounge onto the window and then c***p on the window and then I spend most of the summer cleaning them. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can use or even make my own. I found something in a mag not so long ago but I must of thrown it out.

I would also like to know what to use because the flies are something awful. An old lady in the shop the other day told me to put pepper on the lids or your pots while cooking. The smell of the hot pepper are supposed to act as a deterrent. I tried it and it did seem to help in a way but I would like something that poses as a complete deterrent and not just while I'm cooking!

One year we bought fly traps from the hardware store and hung them in an outside tree where they trapped hundreds of flies however it didn't stop them entering the house.
We have installed insect screens because the flies are unbearable and they do speckle everything they land on. For fruit fly we made home made traps out of plastic bottles follow this link http://www.abc.net.au/riverina/stories/m754257.pdf for instructions whether this will work on house flies though I have no idea. OH keeps an old fashioned plastic fly swatter handy and claims it is best of all.

I thought I would bring this thread up again as we have some new members now that may be able to help, as the flies are out in force, does anyone know how to make or what I could use to kill the flies off without having to use any harmful chemicals?

I read somewhere that lavender oil deters flies, I suppose you could try wiping it around the windows or hang some bunches around the house. Having a conservatory is great but it does encourage flies, I brought a lovely fly swat home from Finland last year which I use with great delight but can be messy!
