I have occasion to post small packages, sometimes several times a week, and whilst I am aware that 'The Post Office' has now become more than what its' name suggests, I strongly object to being told ...every time I post something.... that 'we can guarantee it for next day ' etc. etc. when I have specifically asked for 'first class and proof of posting please' and once I have persuaded them that first class is what I want, they then launch into a long rigmarole of 'do I want to change my ISP, can they save me money on my phone bill,do I want holiday insurance' and hundreds of other things.
I don't know if I am being unreasonable, but I bitterly resent this and with a queue a mile long ,it is a waste of time.Added to all this unnecessary questioning, there is a TV screen playing through ALL the options the cashier tries to sell you.

Isn't it time we were allowed some freedom of choice?

I too use the Post office quite a lot for small packages and know just what you mean, I get just the same.I don't really like discussing my business either with a queue behind me listening.I think we know what we want so stop offering us what we don't want. X

Going in saying: "I only want what I ask for" wouldn't be an option for you well behaved English ladies would it?

Ivy,I have tried wording it every way I can think of in order to exclude the possibility of them forcing an option onto me,believe me,it doesn't make a scrap of difference!!! so I simply repeat what I asked for originally and eventually,I get it.I think next time it happens,I shall become ever so slightly abrupt and say " what did I just ask for? because that is what I would like".!!! It has now become a challenge !!

Perhaps you could write to the postmaster or postmistress about it? I can understand that the post office sometimes need to diversify, however being bombarded with a sales pitch every time you go in must be a complete headache. Luckily my post office is a case of you get what you go in for. No smiles, no greetings, no sales pitches. Grim, but functional!

In retail terms it's called link selling. We are supposed to do it at work too, but I get very irritated when shoe shops ask me if I've got the matching shoe cleaner.

Our PO staff are a bit like Oola's grim but efficient. I could not stand to be bombarded with all that everytime I visited there. Maybe just a "sorry I'm not interested, (just the stamps please) " as soon as they start, like I do with door to door people.

I am going to try saying" when I want to invest in any of your services,I will ask YOU for the details, meantime ........." whatever it is I have gone in for.

I used to have to fend off medical reps, and that particular response always worked with them, they learned not to waste both mine and their time!!
