I am setting myself a challenge next week of only buying locally and seasonal produce, and using only this as much as I can in my cooking. The thing is, do I count things that store, such as onions, carrots and potatoes? I would like to think yes, but just wondered if anyone else agreed or would like to join me in this challenge? I want to test it out and see whether I notice a difference in the way I cook, the taste and the ease.

I occasionally use tinned food, like chickpeas, pinto beans and baked beans, and other 'storecupboard' greats like passata and rice. But it would be interesting to try and broaden my horizons by only using seasonal veg (difficult at this time of year or not?) to produce my tasty meals.

Last night I made a leek, potato and onion soup and it was absolutely delicious! The leeks were given to me by Mum, but I have some growing in the veg patch that I just want to leave that little bit longer. I already have loads of onion sets ready to go in in the spring, and I will be growing Charlotte and Maris Piper potatoes, and maybe even have a got at Pink Fir potatoes too.

If I was to eat purely seasonal and local produce, would I get bored? Would I be able to afford it? Should I use my storecupboard ingredients (I will definitely be using salt and pepper and veg stock though)? How far do you think I should take it? I think I eat too much bread and cheese, so I want to cut down on those anyway.

I already try to eat seasonally, but I'm not thoroughly committed as yet - I would like to be though. I don't eat fruit really during the winter, unless it's been frozen, and I'll only really eat parsnips, butternut squashes etc in the autumn/winter too. But carrots, potatoes and onions form the staple of my diet, and I'm not up to scratch on how well they store throughout the year. I have a fair idea of the growing season but have never stored veg myself, as I tend to pick it and use it there and then or soon after. I would be really interested to see what people think about this challenge.

I think this is a really good challenge and have decided to join you!!!. I will have to read up though on what is genuinely seasonal. It's so easy to assume that certain veg is seasonal simply because it is there on the shelf.

Thanks!!!! :) Will be interesting to compare results. I too have to put some research in - not sure if January is the best month to do this sort of thing, but still, all part of the education!

One of my mags says cauliflower, swede, broccoli, and rhubarb. You should also be ok with potatoes, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, apples and pears, they are all stored. What will you do about other fruit? Citrus are in season in the Winter.

Interesting challenge Oola, but I am not sure if it is the best time of year to start it. Maybe best to start in Autumn when there is lots available, and some can be preserved for the rest of the year. I am happy to join in, but think that the best way forward if you like variety in your meals is to make the seasonal, local produce the central ingredient in the meal. In that way you can still boost local food while adding store cupboard basics to make it more satisfying, but will suitably use less.

Think I'll have a go at this too. I've got parsnips, kale, leeks and sprouts in the vege patch so that's a start. I've always found that out of season fruit such as strawberries don't have much flavour, so won't be too difficult to avoid them. Shouldn't be too hard to avoid Tesco and shop for local meat in my local shops, now I'm thinking if I walk to the local shops I'll even get fit. Good idea Oola.

Right, so today I bought leeks, winter cabbage, sprouts and curly kale(it said on the advert British season) The new CL Mag has started a new cookery article using seasonal veg...so that will help me!!!

We are having a roast this evening using locally produced beef, braised leeks, local potatoes, and the last stalks of rosemary from the garden. It feels so virtuous, doesn't it?

I haven't even started yet...been so busy working this weekend. I'll be working a lot tomorrow too, so not sure if I'll be able to start. I can probably start with a simple leek, potato and onion soup though...all seasonal (I think!!!!). Better get my thinking cap on soon, if I can find time....arrrggghhh!

Hi Oola, I have been eating seasonal food now for a year and it is so easy to do and I really enjoy the challenge of the cooking side.

I have been using potatoes, carrots and onions though as part of my cooking. Onions store really well. I have not stored carrots before though or potatoes as I only grow enough to last a short while as I do not have the space to grow that amount, but this year I am going to grow more carrots so i can store them and see how they go.

It is great fun eating seasonal food and you do not get bored at all. Love to know how you do, as this is one of my passions.
