I think i have spelt them right.Wow what a day we had yesterday.Just daughter and myself.Beynac has a 12th century castle perched high up on a rocky outcrop. Also a medieval village.Richard the lion heart actually owned it for 10 years.so i'v walked stone steps that he has.Joan of arc was filmed here i think it was a Luc besson film. Also parts of chocolat.Inside the castle was massive and very well preserved. The massive kitchen was full of props and looked just as it would hundreds of years ago.Les eyzies is a cave village.Grottes everywhere. Some houses with caves as thier back.A very fascinating day.I am wondering if anyone else has ever been there.

I love these! My parents in law used to have a lovely old farmhouse in the Dordogne not far from Sarlat, but sadly sold it when they retired form the Foreign Office. It was heavenly and Les Eyzies is incredible. Can you still visit it then? I thought they had decided the "grottes" were suffering from the effects of visitors but maybe that is Lascaux? I believe the inhabitants of these cave-houses are called Troglodytes!

Yes, done them all, eeee! and going there again soon, I think there's a good campsite at Beynac, cheaper than Sarlat.

Theres so many cabines and camp sites. It is a real touristy place but with character not tat.It is great out of season as we had the weather but everywhere was quiet. We stopped for dinner at a restaurant with a terrace. I had magret of canard, yummy.......I have bought some real from the local farm pressed walnut oil mmmmmmmmmmm.Living so healthy and keeping fit.We walked kms today, even walking to a farm that grows and sells produce. They picked the lettuce there and then.I tell you what tho my legs are aching a bit from all the walking to great heights at Beynac and at the village near us.So many villages are built on steep rocky inclines. We are def going back to Les eyzies and Beynac when hubby comes.S.G we didnt actually visit any grootes but it was so fascinating seeing all the houses and grottes coming out of the sandstone. There was rope sort of bridge leading to one grtte. Also there was a lot of camper vans so big pull to the tourists.

I've never been to France, but with your lovely descriptions Eleanor, I wish I could see the places you mention! Someday, we hope to see a bit of France as well. First have to visit the UK again though! We are thinking perhaps in a years' time. X
