Hi Dinger, it's quite an interesting name, "The Doorstep Girls". I haven't some of her books.
I've googled it and it sounds quite an emotional book. I also notice that Valerie Wood got the Catherine Cookson Prize for Fiction for her book "The Hungry Tide". x

It is very good so far Crocus Amazing how those people managed at all when there was no work housing places were hovels and they had to grab a bite of food where they could and the only clothes they possesed were the rags they stood up in also bare feet in all weathers . I will let you know when I have finished reading it how good I thought it was .

The story reminds me quite a lot of books written Catherine Cookson, which had this same theme actually. x

I have read ever single book by Catherine Cookson . Sunday evening we were watching on t v one of her early stories "Tilly Trotter" which had been made into a film . There is one each week and my son records them for us. Next Sunday we will be watching "The Tide Of Life" The week before we saw "A Dinner Of Herbs" I loved her stories and were books hard to put down.

I also read most of her books, even in the case of it being quite heart aching and 'depressing' in a way. But I've learned quite a lot of the area, how they lived in those days because I think most of it is based on the truth. She herself didn't have a very 'comfortable' childhood. We also watched Tilly Trotter, although years ago. I will have look for books by Valerie Wood, thanks Dinger. X
