It is the chinese circus, all acrobats and no animals allowed. Can you remember going to the circus when there was animals? I remember what an occassion it was for us as children when the elephants came on the railway and then walked trunk to tail to the circus ground. I know it is better for animals not to be kept like this but the memories for me as a child were pleasent.

They used to hold an animal circus in a field just off the motorway roundabout on my route to work, so sometimes as the cars came round they would see the elephants tethered by the fence, and slow down to look. And I think there was a scraggy camel, too. Fran.

I am glad to see the end of animals in circuses as it was cruel no matter what the trainers said, although some circuses don't treat their human performers well either, or pay them well.
I can remember going to the circus once as a very small child and there were elephants, 3 tigers, a camel, horses, and trained poodles. But I think that was the only time. Not sure if I liked it, or not. My partner has a poem in his latest book about going to the circus with his younger brother and both crying about the elephants.
I read a fantastic novel called The Final Confessions of Mabel Stark by Robert Hough. It is a fact based novel about the first woman big cat trainer, and is an absolutely riveting read about circus life in the glamour years of the 1920s / 30s.
I am sure that I read an article in CL at one time about a small, old-fashioned style circus of human performers who go around to village fairs etc.?

We didn't go to the circus very much. I remember always being scared that the lions and elephants will somehow escape. It also bothered me that these poor animals were locked up in cages most of their life! No wonder they do sometimes escape while doing a show! I did enjoy all the other things happening in the circus though! It has a kind of magic attached to it.

My daughter and 4 friends are going to the circus tonight, I shall fill you in how she gets on - hope she doesn't volunteer to be fired out of a cannon or anything - I don't know who she's like?
