Just hearing about the hospitals getting some of their food from local suppliers, cutting down on 'food miles', supporting local farmers, and saving money as well.

That's great if it does happen, fran, espacially if it becomes the norm. However, I can't see our new government letting hospitals spend extra money on decent food once they really get going!

Please Jazz, don't bring a political arguement into every thread, I don't think I could stand it.

Well they were saving £2.50 per meal by buying local, so that's setting a good example to others.

I saw the article Fran, and I thought they were to be commended.

OH and I were discusssing this. If they can get say hospitals and prisons to buy some local food, it would make a huge difference to the supply chain.

Not being "party political", Gen if that is what you mean, but isn't our everyday life precisely what politics should be about? I know there are bigger issues but each journey starts with a single step and I would have a lot of respect if someone would look at the "small" issues and realise how they add up!

I don't set out to create a political 'argument' out of every thread, Gen, it is just the natural way that I think and talk. To me, as souter girls says, our everyday experiences are political, especially for women. You know the slogan of the women's movement "the personal is political". As a woman, I am very worried about what this new UK government will mean for people's everyday lives, given the Conservative's track record last time around. Hospital food is an important thing. I am very glad if some hospitals are starting to source their food locally, as it is much healthier and more environmentally responsible, but sincerely hope that the proposed severe cuts to public spending don't put a spanner in the works of a good development.

Not a hospital, but a bistro in a little village we visited last Sunday, on their menu, they say where there food and deli products come from, how much less electricity, water etc. they use than the year before, the percentage of uncooked food they composted; cooked food leftovers are used to feed local pigs. None of their stuff comes from more than 150 km way - this little village is quite isolated. I think it's quite a good idea putting this on the menus. There's also a note to watch the space as they improve. x

Every little helps, crocus. That bistro sound as though they are trying very hard.

They are Fran, and it's a very popular little place in this village. People come from quite a distance to have a bite to eat. It's got a lovely atmosphere inside regarding decor, music etc. Unfortunately my camera's batteries went flat on me, I would've loved to take piccies inside, but here's a link should you want to have a peep.http://www.oakandvigne.co.za/index.html

I think hospitals using local food is a great idea. Fresh food has to be better for the patients and the local economy.
