Save the Children knit a square

Knit baby blankets for newborn babies in third world countries:

Here is the link for our Australian friends ( do we have Australian members at all???)

http://www.savethechildren.org.au/survive-to-five/knit-one-save-one.html

and here for those in Germany.

Unfortunately there are no contact details on the UK website but Australia and Germany are having a competition who gets together more squares.

If you feel you want to support the Germany team please knit away and send it to me via post (pm me for address details) I will patch the squares together, take a photo and pass it on to Save the Children. ( not the Photo that's for you , the blanket of course)

For details please read the Australian link, unless of course, you are fluent in German. I think the Australian site is much nicer and the link from the save the children page does not open on my MAC:(

Hi Ivy, yes we have Australian Members - Baab95 and SummerSkye. I'm also knitting squares which will eventually become blankets for the extreme poor at a missionary. Thanks for the links. x

I'll see if I can find time to do some Ivy. I used to knit blankets and tops for Oxfam but they stopped having them saying it cost to much to ship overseas.

Yes, funny you should say that, df. My late Mum had a group of knitters who knitted strips that Mum stitched together to make blankets that were sent abroad for Save the Children. She sent over 250 blankets, I have a certificate she was presented with. Then the project was wound up, this must have been about 6 years ago.

We knitted blankets and sent them to a country in Africa (can't remember which) and had a thank you letter and a photo of the blankets in use. They were on the backs of their cows!!!

Will do Ivy. Can you still get pure wool like they want?

on the German site they say pure wool or pure Cotton but yes pure wool is still available. I am using up my left overs and did 5 squares yesterday afternoon.

Last year I took my dad for some surgery at a large city hospital. In the very busy waiting room, they had needles and yarn. One of the volunteers told you how many stitches and how many rows so while you were waiting, you were knitting squares for blankets. I'll bet at least 5 women were in the room with needles flying. A brilliant idea I thought!!

What a good idea Cheryl. It can be really boring hanging around waiting rooms so knitting for charity would help the time go quicker and you are doing something worthwhile.

My first blanket is half finished and I still have plenty of wool to use up.
