We've just returned home after a three week stint camping out on the spare room floor at my in-laws. This extreme measure was necessitated by the presence of 3 painters in my living room and upstairs bedroom. Whilst the rooms look fabulous we still can't seem to get rid of the hideous paint odour. (They used gloss paint on the skirtings, architraves, and doors). We have the windows open as much as possible, but so far no luck in shifting the smell. Any tips on eradicating this fug would be appreciated. Thanks

I've tried this in the past and it has worked. Cut a couple of large onions in half, place in bowls of water and it does seem to absorb some of the odour. Not sure how bad the smell is and you probably can't open windows this time of year, maybe several onions...?

Hi baab95, I have used the onion method too and have found that it works quite well. As the gloss paint hardens the smell reduces too, so it may just be that you have to wait a while and get used to your new decor.

Ask dinger. her OH is a proffesional decorator by trade for most of his life, if anyone knows he does.

Thanks everybody for your advice. I'll give the onion method a try and see how we go. Although I must say I'm just so pleased to have the painting (of this part of our house) finished before Christmas. It means that we can really enjoy our living space for the first time in 6 years!
