On the radio this morning the book, "The Shadow of the Wind" (author Carlos Ruiz Zafon) was discussed.

It's a novel set in post-Spanish Civil War Barcelona. It's about a young boy called Daniel who's dad, just after the war, takes him to the secret Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a huge library of old, forgotten titles lovingly preserved. According to tradition, everyone initiated to this secret place is allowed to take one book from it, and must protect it for life. Daniel selects a book called "The Shadow of the Wind" by Julián Carax.

Apparently it's an excellent read and I was wondering if anyone has read this book?

an amusing if slightly "bitchy" anecdote - a local book group (not mine I am glad to say, we are much more normal) were thinking about Shadow of the Wind when one rather snooty type said "Oh it's been a Richard and Judy choice, I don't think we want to go "down brow" do we"! It was pointed out to her that the Spanish author is regarded as a writer of important literature and it is highly prized as a piece of literature in its native language. Honestly, some people!

I've read quite a few Richard and Judy book club choice and some of them have been excellent. I think there is a lot of book snobbery around
