I have quite a collection now of old children's books fairytales and stories from years ago. They are so simple and yet lovely not at all like stories for children today. while out the other day I picked up "A Childs garden Of Verse" it was written by Robert Louis Stevenson this one was printed in 1904. I knew he wrote books such as "Treasure Island" but was'nt aware he also wrote such lovely poetry.

I also received A Child's Garden of Verse as a school prize in primary school, SG. There must have been a job lot! I agree with you, dinger, that some of the old childrens books are really nice, with beautiful illustrations and stories that teach good standards. I have been collecting books that made a big impact on my life as a child eg Where is Mouse? (that I also won as an infants school prize - twice!), The Secret Garden (which lit my fire for gardening), the Nancy Drew mysteries and Sally Baxter girl reporter series (that made me want a career) and, of course, the Famous Five series (which I still blame for my over-enthusiasm for food!). Have you seen the reissues of books like The Dangerous Book for Boys? I think that there is a renewed interest in traditional children's books as the current mainstream moves ever more towards fantasy stories and computer animation.
