David Thoreau said this about books:
"Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. I think that there is nothing, not even crime, more opposed to poetry, to philosophy, ay, to life itself than this incessant business.

A very meaty quote, real food for thought.
When I was head of the English department I was always at odds with the head of maths who said his subject was the most important, I pointed out that you needed to read the question before you could aswer it. Language is the basis of understanding.

I think that each subject is important on it's own. I'm read and book crazy, and can't actually see my life without books. I agree with you, it is quite a meaty quotation, and yes, language is the basis of understanding and if you don't understand language, you won't be able to read or answer any question.

I think books are really important as a great source of knowledge and a great pleasure.
I love books and have quite a good library.
I also think the internet is really good as a tool for learning and knowledge but you can't curl up in bed with the internet like you can with a good book.

"I've traveled the world twice over,
Met the famous; saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners,
I've been where no-one's been before,
Learned secrets from writers and cooks
All with one library ticket
To the wonderful world of books."

Thats very true Crocus. I havn't travelled much but I have seen an heared about so many lovely places and people.
I always feel very sorry for people who can't read as I feel they have missed so much.
Eleanor I bought a lovely new herb book on Saturday. It is really interesting and has some lovely paintings of herbs.

The ability to read is one of the things we take for granted I think. We do it without even thinking what we're really doing. xx
