I'm not sure about this. I'm not even sure whether it should rather be on Health and Wellbeing or even Politics and Rural Issues because all 3 of these threads are important when it comes to the email below which was forwarded to me. Whether it's true I also don't know, but photos were also sent to me which I'd rather not put on here - it's quite upsetting, disturbing and scary. I've googled this and found some of the info on a blog. It was emailed to me (forwarding). Perhaps you know something about this, are aware of this already.

"DANGEROUS IMPORTED FOODS

The whole world is scared of China made 'black hearted goods'.Can you differentiate which one is made in the USA , Philippines , Taiwan or China ? For your Information ... the first 3 digits of the barcode is the country code wherein the product was made. Sample:all barcodes that start with 690.691.692 until 695 are all MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan This is our human right to know, but the government and related department never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUEourselves.Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products 'made in china', so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits is 690 to 695, then it is Made in China ..
00 ~ 13 USA & CANADA
30 ~ 37 FRANCE
40 ~ 44 GERMANY
49 ~ JAPAN
50 ~ UK
57 ~ Denmark
64 ~ Finland
76 ~ Switzerland and Lienchtenstein
628 ~ Saudi-Arabien
629 ~ United Arab Emirates
740 ~ 745 - Central America
All 480 Codes are Made in the Philippines.
Now read on below for specifics on goods from China to protect yourself, your family, and your friends – as I am trying to do.

This is sickening but it is an alert to read labels and always buy fresh when you can.

DO NOT BUY FOOD PROCESSED IN CHINA , HONG KONG , VIETNAM AND THAILAND !!! no food inspection!!!

Have a taste for chicken tenders? READ THIS

WATCH WHAT YOU BUY. ESPECIALLY HIGHLINER FISH PRODUCTS; all come from China , even though the box says ' product of Canada ', it is from China and'processed' in Canada , that is, the coating is added and packaged in Canada only! The fish are raised in pens using chemicals that are banned here in Canada as cancer causing but legal in China . This was exposed on CBC TV's Marketplace .
This one will make you think before buying anything from China .

Well, are you enjoying seeing Chinese food popping up in your supermarket left and right? Have you noticed you can't buy a single package of fish that isn't made in China (or Vietnam )? Do you think your food from China is processed in a sanitary manner, and thus safe to eat? Take a look at this!!
.

THINK ABOUT IT.These undercover enclosed pictures speak a thousand words. Avoid buying all processed food packaged in ChinaAnything goes! We just don't know what else is in those packages. Unlike in the U.S. And CANADA , China does not have laws regulating food processing.

Basically,do not buy any processed food from China , also Hong Kong , too. MANY companies are using a Hong Kong address to avoid this type of image reputation.

Early dawn, starts the day by riding around to collect dead chickens.

Asking around for dead chickens.

Total of 5 riders are hired by the boss to ride to farms to buy dead chickens.

A dead chicken cost 1 RMB and would be sold at 9 RMB after processing.

Storage for the dead chickens in the court yard.

Carcasses are thrown everywhere.

And on the floor....
Four employees start de-feathering the dead fowl after soaking in boiling water from a rusty wok.

Enduring the pungent odor, but sometime, it get so terrible that even the most experienced of the workers would puke.

Workers rushing to get the chickens de-feathered.

A discarded bath tub being used to soak the bare skin dead chickens....The contaminated water would have accelerated the decomposition process.

Wearing slippers walking among the chickens before the coloring processing.

After the color dye, its creepy to find that they are quite tenderized.

And now presenting the mouth watering Charcoal Roasted Chicken!
Do NOT buy food originating in China (or Vietnam or Thailand)! Take the time to read the labels and look for country of origin! STOP BUYING ANYTHING FROM CHINA"

That is interesting ....in a gruesome way..... about the bar codes Crocus,I am assuming that they apply to food because I recently bought some shoes which are apparently 'made in China' and the bar code starts with 55.
What a horrendous account of their dubious practices, forwarned is forarmed and thank you for passing on the warning.

Can it be that foodstuff's bar code differs from other goods, being from the same country I wonder.

I hope so! the new shoes I refer to are New Balance walking trainers (not the ones I was looking for before but nearly as good) they are so comfortable,I thought that they were made in the USA,the last pair I had were and New Balance is an American company so I was surprised when I read the label saying they were made in China.

I wonder if anything actually are produced in any other country than China !! We have a lovely upmarket clothes shop in The Big Mall which always stocked lovely clothes, very well made etc. Suddenly everything's "made in China" and the shop changed on the inside as well. It looks more than a department store than an quite exclusive clothes shop. It's such a pity actually. Even Woolworths which is almost exactly the same as M&S now stock lots of stuff "made in China". One actually feels a bit 'intimidated' by this, because wherever you turn it's china made products, it leaves you almost no choice.

:I try to avoide products made in China wherever I can, not only because of the hygienic circumstances and the hazards to the envirronment but also because of the human rights aspect but as you sy Crocus sometimes you are left without choice, becase I refuse to go bare foot in winter;)

Hi Ivy, I don't know which of these two aspects troubles me the most, human rights, hygiene and animal rights. It seems the Chinese don't have a care in the world for any one of these, not if the pictures I received are anything to go by. Okay, I'm generalising here, but it's not the first time I've come across something like this. Very frequently one will hear about things going horribly wrong regarding these aspects.

I think that it's the other way round, crocus, and not many people in the West care about the conditions of workers in China, and only want to buy cheap goods - whether food or clothes. If something is bought relatively cheaply then something else has to give and that is the hidden part of the production process. But so long as people keep buying, international companies will move their production to China to make more of a profit and it ends up affecting all of us. I agree with you that it is difficult not to buy products that are made in China now, but at least if we are well informed we can make a decision as to whether we need that actual item and are prepared to eat or wear 'unhealthy' goods, or wait and look for something more expensive but made in a country with a better record.

my mum used to tell us 30 years ago dont buy things from china or taiwan.the unhealthy food is frightening.but the cheap products made dont last long.so we buy again cus it is cheap.this is a waste on the environment.i went to town the other day.we wanted to buy grandson some leather trainers.well ladies we are being conned big time.remember when they told us we will cut the cost for the consumer by buying from abroard.i went every shop in my big local town.no lie not one childrens leather trainer.all of them now are plastic and rubber.what price.....not one pair under £28. i will search and search till get a better quality shoe at a decent price. we didnt go the market but will try there.brantanos is out of town s didnt go there.we caused a fuss in one shop insisting they look at every child trainer to see if there was one made of leather.what a con eh. m&s are a bit the same thye have gone abroard and the prices are no lower than they were when they had made in England stuff.i really feel we are being conned big time.the poor workers in thee poor countries slave away for pennies whilst the western owners make themselves filthy rich not to mention they dont control pollution and poison villagers water supplies.

It's about the same situation here Eleanor - cheap Chinese imports are in most shops and what has me red under the collar are the Chinese shops in our village! About 5 of them. I've never been in there, and will have to be extremely desperate before I will enter their shops. They really are a problem but the local council allows the shops because it offers cheap stuff for whoever's interested.
