Yesterday evening OH and I went out for a meal and I was delighted to see the South African dish "Bobotie" on the menu. It is a spicy and fruity minced lamb dish topped with a savoury egg custard. I remembered it from my childhood and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I remember it as a cheap, thrown together dish mainly made-up of kitchen leftovers, but on this menu it had a pride of place! What food surprises have you had in restaurants?

I make Bobotie quite a lot Jazz, because we all love it. A while ago we went to Robertson and had lunch in a very nice trendy modern restaurant. Coronation Chicken caught my eye as it's traditional a British dish. What did surprise me though was that it was served in a wrap which I don't think is at all traditional.

About the Bobotie Jazz, I know it as being made of minced beef actually, with curry being the main component as far as spices go, and of course some other spices are also added. Then egg and milk mixture on top and baked in oven. xx
