We noticed whilst we were away that lots of people had boats or ships in their windows and lots of nautical things were very popular. Softie has this look already in her flat and now has got the bug to have more. She has bright striped curtains and is now on the cadge for one of my vintage deckchairs.:D

Do you have any theme to your room or home? X

My son has a rope, a wooden lighthouse, a glass float, a wooden seagull and a cabinet that looks like beach huts in his bathroom. I like it there but being in land I wouldn't go for that style in the living areas.

I think that it can look nice if it isn't overdone and you live in a coastal area. The nautical look can seem a bit strange inland. It is tempting to go for it to feel as if you can extend a holiday, but in the middle of winter the look can wear a bit thin! I used to live in a coastal village, but kept the nautical look to the bathroom, where I even went in for some pebbles on the floor!

My theme is vintage, not kitsch at all, I try to hide modern stuff.

We live about 35 km inland from the sea, but in the flatlet I have some "sea stuff" because I wanted to create a relaxing holiday and seaside feel for when relatives and friends come for a visit. xx

I love the look especially in "style" magazines and agree that inland you have to be careful. Excellent in bathrooms of course - why is that? Also love nautical striped T shirts etc for summer wear - nautical but nice!

I love the nautical look but wouldn't have it where we live in the countryside. I love staying at places on holiday that have that look. My modern bungalow is just modern, no themes.

I just had a thought that my summerhouse would look good as a beech hut.

If there is any theme to my house it must be Boho, by accident rather than design. We both like lots of books, original works of art, natural floors, mismatched furniture, and a mix of old and new in bold designs. As we live in the countryside we have a bit of a natural theme going on too, but not much.

Aah lovely Sheds. She will enjoy that I'm sure. At the seaside village where we use to go is quite a large shell shop with all kinds of different shells, from tiny pink little shells to quite large ones. Also lots of other nautical stuff. xx

I think so too Crocus, we have found a shop which sells brightly coloured deck chair material and Softie is just mad on it, I think the bright colours inspire her.But will she do it I don't know? X

I bought a lovely old wooden steamer chair that is all original but will need recovering, it is a smasher and I think Softie will love it for her home. Also I have been sourcing lots of other things that will be turned into nautical. X

Good for you sheddie,I think a nautical theme is great and if it help Softie light up her creative skills then all power to her elbow, and selling items she has updated/repaired etc could be a real winner.I love the sound of the steamer chair, and todays prices for a new one are astronomical.x

I like blue and white interiors which I suppose could be nautical but I find it does need a shot of red or dark blue sometimes for accent. I have collected a lot of sea glass over the years and display that in a big glass container and I like pebbles and a vase full of shells. I would like a mosaic floor in the shower room but they are wildly expensive.

I'm also a fan of blue, but not baby blue as such. So the blue and white nautical theme with splashes of red and navy is quite an attraction.

"The Haven" was once a Victorian stable block and is very countrified on the outside, but has sea views through the trees. The people who owned it before used it as a second home and had a very nautical theme going on. All the walls are pastel shades and when we looked around I noticed a pile of immaculate Coast magazines piled elegantly on one shelf beside some artistic looking driftwood.

Now that WE'VE moved in, with two children, two cats and a million books, it's much less immaculate. There is still a nautical hint but mainly natural wood, local artists' work, eclectic cushions, William Morris prints and jam jars with paint brushes in.

Lately I've begun to feel that our bedroom is too cold with it's pale blue walls and wooden floors and have been wondering whether a country stable, with hints of Nautical could cope with an Oriental bedroom twist . . . ?

Hi Seashore 'The Haven' sounds lovely and Softie is first in Smiths as soon as Coast magazine comes out.I think if blue feels too cold change it to Oriental and keep just a few nautical twists, I am sure that would be lovely. So you live on the coast, would it be rude to ask what area? X

SeaShore
12-11-2009, 06:10 PM
Hi Sheddie, not rude at all!! I live on the south coast of the Isle of Wight in a place called St Lawrence on Ventnor Undercliff. The Undercliff is a tangled jungle of wild trees and moss strewn rocks, peppered with fairy tale Victorian mansions and little pathways that lead down to the cliffs, the meadows and the coves. It's a lovely mix of salty coastline and lush woodland.
Hmm . . . in hindsight I think that my Oriental bedroom could be sacrilege to St Lawrence!!!!

Hi Sheds, do you think Softie will take to making her own glass pictures? She made some lovely nautical stuff with fabric, I don't see why it cannot be done with glass as well? XX
