The unfortunate sprout seems to have a bit of a bad reputation, I have a few school memories of pale green, insipid waterlogged brussels boiled to within an inch of their lives. My mother always taught me to leave them while, but to put an X in the end to help them cook quicker. I may be in the minority, but I actualy really enjoy brussels now. When i first married I steamed them, but cut them in halve which really cuts down on cooking time. Sometimes I add walnuts, you can add sauted onions, bacon, pancetta in a little knob of butter and toss them all together to meld the flavours. They're lovely roasted in olive oil and a little sea salt too. Now I've just found out that it's actually true that cutting them in half makes them taste better as it releases the gas that gives them the strong flavour. So if you have any brussel haters, do try cutting them in half, maybe the flavour wont be so offputting.

Thanks keepersdaughter, I am married to a man who loves brussels sprouts, but I am not bothered either way myself. Your ideas for cooking them sound lovely, and will come in very useful for when he starts to get excited about those big bags of pre-Chirtsmas brussels.

Thanks for that. When I was pregnant they made me sick, so I have never liked them much since then but now I will try cutting them in half.
