I had a wonderful afternoon watching John Letts model a male head from clay. He started with a rough lump of clay and in 3/4 of an hour he had produced a life size bust of a man, reminiscent of a fisherman, with weatherworn features and a beard, all topped by a woollen hat and scarf.

If you are interested have a look at this site www.lettssculptures.co.uk/Home.html go to the sculptures and play the video. Chris is his son. He did a commission of George Eliot for the Market Place in Nuneaton and the Queen for George Eliot Hospital. I have seen both of these and am an admirer. he told us he was even allowed to take measurements of the queen's head and said she never stopped talking and was very funny.

It must be really satisfying to create a statue like those. I wish I could.

I think it's quite therapeutic as well, carving away, shaping a figure. x

He told us he had arthritis in his hands, but felt no pain while working, only when he stopped.

You were lucky to see a demonstration like that, Gentian. I had a look at the website and like the photo in the centre best, as I prefer more abstract sculpture. Father and son are very skilled, and must be very knowledgeable about human biology too to be able to sculpt the human form so accurately.
