I use grobags for early salad leaves and also spring onions. I planted some of these in one of last years tomato grobags in my unheated greenhouse and they have already germinated. I added some feed as the compost will have lost all its nutrients

Hi bonnie
If you're growing tomatoes in your grow bags, be sure to stake them in when they're tall enough. Also make sure you water them well, as grow bags are quite shallow and can dry out easily once the weather gets hotter.
I tend to use the compost from the grow bags in pots now, as I found grow bags really fiddly for taller plants like tomatoes. This year I've bought New Horizon organic vegetable growing compost, going to see how that goes. My cabbage seedlings have sprung very quickly so I think it's doing well. They also did a Which? test on the best compost for veg, and this is the one that turned out the best results - and it's peat free I think, which is a bonus!
This year I'm going to try straw bale growing, probably with some squashes (butternut squash and atlantic giant pumpkins) or maybe some cucumber plants. You can also plant nasturtiums that will trail over the sides of the straw bales too, making them look a bit prettier!
Straw bales slowly decompose, and this process releases heat and nutrients, which helps the plants grow strongly. And once you've finished growing with them, you can sling them in the compost heap. Around here a straw bale is very cheap - around £2.50 max I would have thought.
