My grand-daughter is going for blood tests this morning as the doctor believes she has got Glandular Fever. I am hoping this is not the case because she is just beginning her G C S E exams and it would be such a pity after the hard work she has put in to be held back. I feel worried about her she is so poorly and her throat is almost closed up so she is struggling to even get a drink down.

Oh dinger, I do feel sorry for your grand-daughter. I had glandular fever (or mono nucleosis) when I was 17 and was very ill with it for about a year. I had a constant sore throat, always felt tired and slept a lot, could hardly keep any food down, and my eyes and skin went a funny yellow colour. Exactly what you don't want when you are an active and sociable teenager! If your grand-daughter has this she will recover, but has to take it easy, and it will remain in her system for quite a while so for a few years afterwards every cold seems to be worse than it should be. Your grand-daughter's health is more important than exams, although she may be able to take some of them as she will feel better on some days than others, but exams can always be taken again at a later stage and she will be none the worse for it.

I hope she has some kind of medication which will ease the pain and discomfort a bit?

I believe that the Epstein-Barr virus which can cause Lymphoma in people with a suppressed immune system (elderly, chemo or transplant) can present as Glandular fever in young people. Might be worth knowing if anybody close falls into this category. Many of us carry the virus with no ill-effects however.

'Morning dinger,I am so sorry to read that your granddaughter is being tested for glandular fever,it seems so unfair when she has been working so hard for her exams,I do hope it isn't that which has contributed to the possibility, sometimes very hard work at school coupled with being a growing teenager can cause the health to suffer in this way.
Do let us know how she gets on with the blood results.... and exam results come to that.

Oh dinger, more worry for you with your poor niece. i have heard this illness can make you very poorly. hopefully blood tests will show it's just a virus or something.
Dinger you seem to be carrying the weight of the whole family on your shoulders, it must be really getting you down.
If i could wave a magic wand i would send you off for a long well earned rest on a far away sunny island, where nobody could find you so YOU can have a couple of weeks rest and some time just for you.x

Alan Sherman sang a song about Mono Nucleosis when his daughter had it.

The song itself is a bit difficult to find. Found a lot of Allan Sherman's songs, but not this one, except for the lyrics:
