I have this green vase which was in my parents' house ever since I can remember. As you can will notice the green paint or whatever it is, is starting to come of just by touching it. It's almost like little flakes. As it's not the loveliest vase available, it does have quite sentimental value to me, but I don't know what to do with it now. Must I leave it like it is, do I paint it or what? Any of you arty people perhaps have some advice?

I'm not an expert by any means, but it seems that the paint needs sealing so that no more flakes off, how to do this I'm not sure, a clear varnish may be, it comes in mat and gloss, or even hair lacquer.

Problem is, the green paint is now almost non-existent as it flakes off just by the slightest touch. The white underneath I think must be some kind of undercoat or something. Perhaps I should just try and get all the green paint off and give it a coat of paint. x

It's a pity you can't preserve what is there as I think it is quite attractive. As I write this I wonder if the varnish might bring it all off. Where there are darker parts is this raised?

Hi Gentian, yes it is raised. I've taken another photo in the daylight for a better perspective and also what's written on the bottom.

I think it's lovely if you could halt the flaking at this stage and seal. When I do decoupage eggs I use a clear varnish, the ones model aeroplane makers use. I think I would try this.
This is a paperweight made from salt dough, coloured with felt tip pens and covered in this clear varnish. It has protected it for many years.

I think this vase is now too far gone and if you like it you could rub it down with some fine sandpaper and repaint to suit your home. I think varnish will just lift the loose paint off. X

The paint is very flaky, you can't touch it. My sister can't stand this vase, and I must say it's not the most beautiful vase available, but has sentimental value. Perhaps I should rub it down with sandpaper and paint it. Thanks girls. xx
