Shepherd's Pie, is it made with minced lamb, and do you also add veggies?
I make Cottage fairly regularly and use minced topside beef.

We went to the chippy and OH had a kebab and I had curry and chips. We have been out all day and couldn't be bothered to cook.

We ate at lunchtime and I did an omelette, full of tomatoes and mushrooms and to fill it out I added fried potatoes, more like a frittata I suppose as I finish it topped with cheese under the grill and do not fold. I served it with a green salad.

Well, I've been on night duty all week and terribly tired. But this evening was determined to attend a concert. So treated myself to toasted crumpets.....comfort food!!!

Too tired to cook and frankly too full after going out for lunch, so home made veg soup (courtesy of OH) bread and cheese. Lovely!
Strange tradition in OH's family is to call Cottage / Shepherd's pie Dhobi pudding. Why??
Well his grandparents spent many years in India as his grandfather was in the Indian Police and shepherds were also night watchmen (watching over their flocks, like in the Christmas carols), somehow the word Watchman blended into Washerman and a washer man was a dhobi wallah. Weird. Does anybody else have idiosyncratic words for things in their families? (we also have swangets for sandwiches)

We had steak, dauphinoise potatoes and salad - cooked by OH. We add veg and garlic and herbs to our Shepherds Pie, and top it with a mix of mashed potato and sweet potato. That is really interesting about the name Dhobi Pie, souter girl. The only unusual name that we have for food in our household is a regional one where my OH calls crumpets "pikelets" form his Yorkshire origins. However, Scotland was the place for different names for food - "Stovies" for a mixture of sausage meat and mashed potato, a "piece" for a sandwich, "Lorne sausage" for slabs of sausage meat, and "juice" for any type of soft drink. Older people often called jam "jeely" as well. It took a while to learn.

Stovies.....aaaaah! Happy memories. I too remember "juice", a "piece" indeed a "jeely piece" but don't recall lorne sausage. But shopping was called "the messages" and dustbins were referred to as "buckets" At the risk of being moderated out for my language I also believe that "sex" was what coal was delivered in, in Morningside in Edinburgh.

As it's quite hot, we're only having salad tonight. Avo's, cheddar cheese, baby tomatoes, crisp lettuce and Mr C has added some coriander leaves to his salad. Lovely refreshing actually.

The weather is lovely and cool today and at the moment the wind is blowing, and it's raining! So Veggie soup for us tonight, that's me and Mr C, and because the boys don't like veggie soup, some kind of pasta dish for them. Or perhaps curry and rice .........or something. What's on your menu for tonight ? xx

I'm doing a risotto with lots of mushrooms, peas and chicken from yesterday's roast. Then we will have another dishful of apple crumble, made incidentally with the last of last year's apples picked in September.

Th weather has been coolish the last few days so comfort food is on the menu. Last night was homemade chicken parmigiana with mash and homegrown beans, tonight its mousakka. Thankfully these meet everybodies requirements, so no short order cooking in the past few days.

While on stews and the like, and it being St Patrick's Day today, should you make Irish Stew, do you use lamb or beef? What does tradition say, should it be lamb or may it be beef? xx
