We're off for a couple of days in a few weeks to Dartmouth in Devon. I've been there before and am looking forward to going on the steam train again, and possibly over to Burgh Island, but I wonder if anyone has any ideas of where we can visit (on a budget!)?

Can't Spell - Dartmouth should be the subject line but you all know what I mean ;)

There's Torbay of course, and I love going to Totnes, it's so genteel and CL. Berry Pomeroy castle near Totnes was good too, we came upon a Medieval weekend last time. If you like walking, there's a lighthouse at Start Point, you can walk along the cliffs from Hallsands. Buckfastleigh and Buckfast Abbey, and the Butterfly Farm with otters nearby. Also the hedgehog hospital at Newton Abbot. Is there a Tourist Info on line? Presumably that might give you a few ideas too. Fran.

I have such fond memories of Dartmouth, my late husband Nigel and I were there on his ship. We were moored there for almost a week before sailing to the West Coast of Ireland and the West Coast of Scotland. It just happened to be our last trip before he passed away. So my memories are very fond there. My daughter Natalie went there last year and brought me a beautiful necklace from the same shop that I brought my husband last birthday present from. I have some wonderful photo's there.

Have a great time Oola. I loved the steam train, but it was a wet day when we went on it, but still fun.

You can look in the window of the 'New Angel' John B urton-Race's restaurant, not the place to eat if you are on a budget. As Healing Hands says, there are some super shops there now and you can take the ferry up to Totness.

If you like old places, Buckland Abbey and Saltram House are both worth a visit (Nat Trust, I know Buckland is open to end of October, not sure about Saltram). New shopping Mall just opened in Exeter. Nice pub for fish + chips= Start Bay Inn- right on shore line.Get there early for lunch- it fills up very quickly.Fairly new Sea Life Centre at Torbay. Coastal footpath for walks if fine. Will try to think of more. More thoughts- Tavistock, traditiona market town with individual shops (google for info re maret days etc.Dartington Cider press centre for crafts + vege restaurant. Brentor on Dartmoor has small church on top of tor- if you feel energetic. Hound Tor also on dartmoor has remains of medieval settlement, stone rows at Merrivale also interesting.

Thanks all - trip has been cancelled as of yesterday unfortunately. Hopefully maybe we'll be able to go later on. Will definitely come back to this thread and make a note of all your suggestions though!
