Argh, not long ago I was out in the most torrential rain I have ever experienced. I saw it start and headed out to make sure that the chickens were ok. They were cowering in a corner so I called them and they started following me in a line to the greenhouse, but stopped at their 'camp' (more leaky and draughty than the greenhouse). Only Maureen followed me and then turned back when she saw where the others were.
My umbrella wouldn't stay up and kept getting blown around, and when I took it down it was literally like standing under a shower. So I wrapped my scarf around my head and shoulder and set about picking up the chooks and carrying them under my scarf/shawl to the greenhouse where they could stay dry.
So one by one the first three were dashed there, only Cynthia, the last hen I had to take, hates being picked up and is really fast. I couldn't catch her and she was darting around in all this wind and stair rod-type rain. I gave up and went over to the greenhouse to call her over but she just stood in her camp on her own squawking. Eventually I managed to 'drive' her like a sheep to the greenhouse, and she settled in happily with the others, preening their wet feathers and looking a bit flustered after all the weather and drama. Just looked in on them now and they're still preening but looking very relaxed in the greenhouse. Left their water and some mixed corn in there since it's still a bit drizzly.
I, in the meantime, am having to dry all my clothes on the radiator and still have half a wet head!
