I haven't planned my holiday for this year yet as I can't decide where to go. I fancy Ireland (which I have never been to) or Scotland (I went once as a teenager) I would love to go to either but OH wouldn't. As he won't get round to deciding where he wants to go I will end up choosing. Can anyone suggest somewhere nice and warm & sunny (doesn't have to be hot) or tell me where you are going and why. I don't like sitting on a beach all day, I like to visit places of interest and am in the NT so love old historical places and gardens.

Well, I won't be going on holiday this year. Haven't been for some years now, but I don't mind. Saves money! lol! Besides, when you live in such a beautiful area as I do, I can take odd days here and there, and I don't need the usual week when I get back to recover from the holiday, even more lol!
Anyway. You ask where can you get sunshine and warm? Pay your money and take your chance! I had a friend looking forward to three weeks in Sunny Spain, and it rained every day he was there! What about Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly? Lots of NT properties there, Llanhydrock, Trelissick, Boscastle, Cornish Mines, Cothele, Tintagel, St Michael's Mount etc. West Wales has stunning scenery, but not many properties. There are a few, Dinefwr, Dolacothi, Llanerchaeron, Colby, Tudor Merchant's etc, but more mid to north Wales. Of course, your handbook will tell all! But mind, if you do come to west Wales, I shall expect to see you!

Goodness, the places you mention sounds so interesting and inviting RP! I so want to see West Wales, more in particular Pembrokeshire. Apparantly it's where my ancestors came from in 1820. xxx

I fancy Scotland Eleanor and will look into it, the botanical gardens particularly.
Rustic I have done all those in Cornwall except the mines. I havn't been to many places in Wales particularly west Wales so will research it and if I visit your area I will look you up. It sounds lovely from your description. Thank you for the ideas.
Crocus I am thinking of going before June or after September as I am planning a vegetable plot this year and it will need looking after and will be to much for my elderly neighbour to look after. But If I saw somewhere really interesting I would go anytime. I enjoy summer at home if the weather is nice.

Hi DF, have you perhaps given the Yorkshire Dales a thought? It's such a beautiful area with lots to see. XX

Crocus, I have been to the town of York a few times but never thought of the dales. Isn't that where they film Last of the summer wine? We like cottage holidays in rural areas. The trouble is OH doesn't like holidaying north of us as he says it is always cold and windy ,that is why I am having trouble getting him to Scotland.

Hi DF, I know Holmfirth is one village where "Last of the Summer Wine" was filmed. We've holidayed in a very small little village called Newbiggin in the Dales. Rented a cottage, Bishop's Garth, but unfortunately the cottage has been sold, renovated and is now private property. The owner told us that directly opposite there's also holiday cottages for rent, but that's all I know.
The Dales are a beautiful part of Yorkshire, with rolling hills, drystone walls, green pastures, barns and quaint little villages. Muker, Kettlewell, Thoralby, Aysgarth, (also Aysgarth waterfall), Askrigg, are but a few villages. If you drive up Buttertubs Pass you will get to the highest Pub in the UK, Tan Hill Inn. (Link below)
Hawes is a lovely village, there's lots to do, quaint little shops, antique shops, farmer's market every Tuesday, Wensleydale Creamery which produces delicious cheeses. There's a shop and a lovely restaurant). Here's some links:

Reeth is also a lovely place to visit. It kind of sits on a hill and the view is quite something. Delicious pies are sold in this village!

Leyburn has a teapot factory with every kind of teapot you can think of. http://www.teapottery.co.uk/
Then of course don't forget about Black Sheep Brewery in Masham!

I wish I could get on the next plane to visit the Dales........
More to the east you will find Byland Abby, with a pub and I think also accommodation directly across. By night this Abby lightened - an awesome sight! http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.17035
We've had some wonderful days in the Dales and it's a place very, very near to my heart.

What lovely places Crocus, you seem to have been to more places in this country than me. Thank you very much for showing me these links. I like the stone cottages and would love one with a real fire. We will have to decide soon where we are going. We want a week away in April. Thanks again. xxx

crocus, you missed the ropeworks in Hawes! The cottage of OH's friend who died is in Bellerby, just out of Leyburn. It's still for sale.....
Did you get to Grassington?
No, I take that back, you didn't miss the ropeworks! seen it on the link.

Hi DF, it was such a pleasure! We love the Dales to bits. I actually forgot to mention Bolton Castle, Bolton Abbey as well as Rievaulx Abby - breathtaking beautiful places in breathtaking surroundings. Oh dear. I better stop now, or else .........
Hi Fran, I actually wanted to mention it, we visited the ropeworks and other interesting places. The information centre is really worth a visit as well. It's well presented with informative brochures and all kinds of information.
Something else of a bit of interest, the world's oldest operational turbine is housed in the Mill, a protected building, in the little village of Gayle, just a stone's throw from Hawes.
