Dear God - a certain crisp company not unconnected with a former footballer have announced a new range of flavours today. Had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't an April Fool but ... Cajun Squirrel, anyone? (or Crispy Duck, Onion Bhaji, Fish&Chips and Builder's Breakfast, for that matter).

It's probably a clever marketing ploy to get headlines but .... while Onion Bhaji has possibilities I can't be the only one to wonder: how do they know what a squirrel tastes like? (wherever it comes from) - surely this isn't going to play well in this nation of animal lovers. And what sort of squirrel, pray - 'cos if it's a grey one it's basically a bleedin' rat and that does not appeal. (& before anyone asks, yes I am old enough to remember Chipmunk Chips - just - but that was the brand name with a cute cartoon critter on the pack, the flavour was ?beef or bovril, can't remember which. They weren't implying you were tasting chipmunk!). Caused much-needed Friday afternoon amusement here, anyway (the lads reckon the last one will become known as Builders Bum - not a very sophisticated lot in the office today, I'm afraid). On which thought, have a good weekend everyone!

Well, Annie, I hate to say this but in America, chipmunk is a food in a not dissimilar way that we might eat rabbit. I guess it is only one step from there to assume that squirrel is the UK version of chipmunk. This is going beyond the capabilities of even my own vast and fertile imagination. I need to go and lie down.

Maybe quite tasty with lots of Cajun seasoning, annie! I don't fancy the Builders Breakfast flavour - eeuch! milky tea, greasy bacon and soggy roll... Although some sophisticated builders who once worked on my house brought their own breakfast of muesli, fruit and herbal teas! So who knows? My OH thinks that all the flavours sound lovely...

My favourite flavour of crisps was pickled onion but they didn't make them for long so I suppose not many people liked them.

The advertising company you are on about DF were asking the public to put ideas forward for a new flavour and if chosen you would win a £1000. i think some of these flavours must have been put forward as jokes never thinking they would be chosen. i dont think i will be rushing out to buy any of the flavours mentioned.

They all sound quite unappealing. I think companies are getting desparate to come up with new ideas. I was shopping for a new mascara today and both the Lancome and Estee Lauder ladies were trying to get me to buy their new vibrating mascara wands.
I don't don't get the point. How much effort is it to brush a little mascara on.

I don't know about eating chipmunk they are hardly bigger than a mouse, not much meat to be found. Sweet looking little things, though they keep pinching the bird food. Here in the south Brunswick Stew is very popular. A sort of rich heartly stew type concoction with tomatoes, veggies, chicken, pork and originally yes, squirrel apparently. urgghhh.

KD, a vibrating mascara wand, whatever the heck next! I think that would probably find itself vibrating its way into my eyeball! Ouch! Double Ouch! Methinks I feel another lie down coming on!!!!!!!!!

I once visited a home in Florida and the husband had just brought home a sack of chipmunks and the wife was preparing them for the pot. As you say, not very big, but then if you think about it people used to eat things like small garden birds centuries ago.

The Afrikaans pioneers in South Africa used to eat rats, snake and, in years of swarm devastation, locusts. Do you remember one of the school history books that included recipes for these 'feasts' taken from an old Voortrekker handbook, crocus?

My OH is currently munching his way through a packet of Sausage and Onion crisps. I liked the Pickled Onion flavour too, dragonfly, and now settle for Worcester Sauce flavour, if I can find them.
