Hi all, does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the creaking of new floorboards in an upstairs floor? We have just had a new wooden floor put in above our sitting room and it makes creaking noises even when no-one is walking on it! It might be my imagination, but it seems to get worse in high winds! Do you think this is normal and the floor is just settling, or should I call the carpenter back out? If normal, then do you have any hints and tips on how to shut it up a bit? All suggestions welcome.
There are some tips on this if you Google, including talcum powder. Not sure how this would help long term. Sounds like some of the wood is too close together , causing rubbing? Not much help but you might find some more on google.

My Oh is a carpenter and says " If the floors been nailed down as the timber is drying out, especially with central heating, it may of loosened the boards on the nails and some of the boards may need to be scewed down.If it continues get your carpenter back to sort it.

Thanks to both of you. I had a look, Sheddie, and your OH is right and a couple of the nails on the squeakiest side do look as if they have popped out a bit. I'll replace them with some screws and see what happens. Since I posted this they do seem to have become quieter!
