This is the 5th night that we've had loads of fireworks banging round the house, not counting the ones we had for the last 2 weeks. Timesharepuss has spent the hours from dusk squashed underneath a chair, and only emerges at midnight when hungry. (and I'm not too keen either, but don't fit under the chair). I think it should all be limited to 1 or 2 nights, it's just not fair on animals. Fran.

I agree that outdoor fireworks should be restricted to organised community events only, as some people seem to think that the whole of the first fortnight in November is reasonable. We have had a few bangs at night here, but luckily my elderly dog is now deaf and it hasn't affected him this year.
My mum's old cat had a bit of a trauma one year (they lived near to the rugby ground with the firework display) and his bottom sort of popped itself out because he was so scared. Luckily it was poked back in and functioned ok after that - but still, I remember signing some petition by the RSPCA to limit the noise on displays. I don't think members of the public should have loud banging fireworks. Some people here are stupid and let them off at all times of the night, and one year it went from 5th Nov right through past new year. It can get REALLY antisocial. But of course if you limit people on these things they'll only complain and use buzz words like 'nanny state' - it's just regretfully the fact that a lot of people have no respect, courtesy or common sense about these things.
How grumpy do I sound!? :)

Yes I agree we can still hear them going off at this very moment .They were going off weeks before the 5th and can see them still going for weeks to come.

My neices dog that she got from a rescue home has been terribly distressed and she hasn't known what to do to calm it, I think it's such a shame and they go on for so long before and after Nov 5th.
We were all ready to go out to the theatre on Saturday, but one dog was shaking, dribbling and super glued itself to us, the other was trying to escape via the back door. Result- we stayed in. I think unless people are a bit more responsible they will be restricted to organised displays only, which is a shame for those who have small family parties.

This year has'nt been quite so bad as other years. The worst year was when the air was so thick with smoke it looked like old fashioned London fog. And the noise, well, it was like living in a war zone. That night our budgie died from shock and our son's friends rabbit died as well. Oh well, peace and quiet until next year.

In the village newspaper (every Friday) there was a HUGE notice: No fireworks allowed on Guy Fawks - Geen vuurwerke word toegelaat op Guy Fawks. (the last bit is Afrikaans)

It is bad round here too & I feel sorry for the ponies & sheep on the Moor who must wonder what on earth is happening. Also people are not good at picking up their rubbish, so the moor is scattered with rocket shells etc.

This is why I am in favour of banning the public sale of fireworks, only having well-organised public displays. In the hands of responsible people, they are a joy to watch, on the appropriate night. Otherwise they are a blessed nuisance, scaring the cat, who hides in a corner until it's gone quiet, and going on for several days here too.
