We got back from the UK on Saturday evening and had travelled 2850 km, the long journey to the port being 1480 km and the rest having been spent going to see people! We will not do that again and in future we've decided to rent a holiday cottage in Shropshire/Staffordshire (my mother lives near Eccleshall) and if people want to see us they can do the travelling. We both came home exhausted and without having done some of the things we wanted to. There just wasn't time. As well as a holiday cottage we'll allow more time.
We drove from Hull to North Wales (near Bangor), then to near Eccelshall and back and then from North Wales to North Yorkshire. What a long way!
However, it was lovely to eat fresh sea fish instead of frozen and despite all the travelling we really enjoyed seeing family and friends. I just wish they didn't all live so far apart. And it did seem strange speaking English all the time, we've got so used to a bilingual existence.
And if any of you go to North Wales I can recommend Bangor Pier; this is Victorian and has recently been renovated. We ate the best scones we've ever eaten in the tearoom at then end of the pier. It was lovely being blown by the wind on the pier after our long journey - our daughter knew what to do to revive us after our arrival!
We're glad to be home though - is it age that makes you happiest in your own bed?
Now I'm back I seem to have rather a lot of threads to catch up with so I'd better get cracking.
