I found these ideas in the free shopping magazine from my local supermarket
which anyone with young children/grandchildren may find useful:
Skip the name and instead print holiday words like 'sled', 'magical', 'Father Christmas', etc. on gift tags. Identify recipients by colour only, eg, blue for David, silver for Fiona, etc. (or you could write the word on the reverse of the gift tag). After the gifts are opened, use the tags later as a winter storytelling game for the whole family.
Simply throw all the tags in a bag and have players take turns drawing out words and weaving them into a story, one sentance at a time. For example,
There was a little girl named Emily who wanted a SLED more than anything in the whole world... But Emily didn't want an ordinary sled, she wanted a MAGICAL sled... with a big red nosed FATHER CHRISTMAS.. you get the idea.
Use square cut from paper bags to create mini bags for your homemade tags. Get the children to use scraps from around the house like buttons, yarn, rickrack, ribbon, glitter, old cards, anything on hand for them to be creative. Make the individual gift tags then use the paper from the bags to wrap around and cut to fit and make a little envelope for the tag. Tie with ribbon, raffia, or twine to attach to gift.
