I have had this book lent to me from my daughter . Telling the ways of when babies were born in the early years by the local midwife who had to peddle to her patients on a bike .I am only early on in reading it yet but is a good read so far .

When I saw Dinger's name and "call the midwife" I must admit I did have a little wonder if there was something she wasn't telling us??
I am boiling lots of water just in case.

Read out any funny bits, dinger, we could do with some light relief too.
I believe the boiling water stuff is a bit of a myth, I had my second child at home and the kettle never went on once, not a drop was required!

That must be a fascinating book, dinger. I can remember when the midwife peddled 'round on her bike. The midwife was also the school nurse and did the vaccinations and nits, so the local children were all a bit scared of her. My younger sister was born at home that way in 1965. I remember lots of instructions, sheets and enamel bowls of hot water, and my sister was born at midnight in my parents' bed. My dad was a Vet and 'helped', while I secretly looked on.

Oh it is quite true the water had to be on the boil . It was'nt always a pleasant job for the poor midwives some of the patients had no hygene so they had all kinds of smells whiffing over them .
my daughter has just returned to midwifery training and has delivered two healthy babies this week .One normal delivery one a birthing pool delivery beautiful little boy and girl .x

She is on night work over the next three nights so no doubt she will deliver a few more . Babies tend to want to be born at night don't they .xxx

I have just finished reading this book but was disappointed in it . After starting off about midwifery in the 50s it seemed to go right of coarse and went on to everything else . Did'nt enjoy this one .xx
