Yes folks, I have it on strict authority (through the grapevine of course) from the farmer's mouth that next year there is likely to a be a red onion shortage, given the appallingly wet weather we had this year. So what red onions are available are likely to be quite pricey or perhaps even limited supplies (although I don't know the extent of the shortage). I suppose the supermarkets will fly or ship them in from elsewhere (bad!), but I'm not keen on buying something that has travelled so far and possibly not stored properly. I like my onions as fresh as possible, nothing could beat my Hercules onions from my veg patch this year.

So if you have an allotment, veg patch or spare tub, why not whack in some red onions and save yourself the expense next year? I know I will :)

We could make a killing here girls, red onions in every spare space, we could be millionairs this time next year.

why are only red onions affected? Are they more susceptible to rain than white ones?

not sure - perhaps it's just that white onions are grown more prolifically than red?

hate to be smug, but have already planted red onion sets. have heard that lots of vege will be in short supply/expensive due to appalling summer.

I don't understand this but my red onions did better than my white ones this year. I wonder if other Swiss growers found the same thing - if so they'll be cheap here next year.
