View Full Version : Hanging Pictures?

I would like to hang a number of pictures on a wall to create a sort of gallery. The wall is a partition wall made of plasterboard, rather than solid, so mistakes made in making holes for hangers really show. The pictures are all random sizes and frames, and I am wondering whether it is best to hang them so that all the top frames are in line or all the bottom frames to create some order to the pattern. Advice appreciated - how have you hung yours?

You could try just having a marked area like a square, and hanging all the pictures so that they fill that square, with the picture's outside frames creating the outline of the square (hope this makes sense!).

A smaller scale version of this:

Depends on how many pictures you have to hang. If there are enough (and the frames are the right size) I would probably do as Oola suggests.

If there's only enough for one line, then I would line up the mid points of each frame so there's symmetry along the horizontal centre line.

Failing that I would just jumble them up in a rough "area" making sure it's roughly balanced - ie, if there's a large picture at the bottom left, then mirror it with another large picture at the top right.

Thank you both, that's really useful information. I think that I will have a go with both ideas by laying the pictures on out on the floor to see which works best. Hopefully, it should be fairly easy to translate onto the wall. Thanks again, I'll get stuck into it tomorrow.

Hi Jazzactivist,

I have twenty odd pics on one wall as a gallery effect.

The largest (horizontal) are featured as straight base line.

Above and below are horizontal or vertical frames (alternate).

Between the main pics are smaller ones, with vertical pic placed in line with main horizontals.

At one end there are 4 small frames in vertical sequence.

Probably sounds like a mess, but it actually looks fantastic.

Cut out the same size paper as each frame and arrange that against the wall first, changing it around until you like the look. When you are happy with how it look, you could perhaps outline the 'paper frames' with a pencil in order to know which paper is which frame!
