I try very hard when shopping to take my own bags so as not to have carrier bags but can't get into the habit yet!

Do you always remember to take your own bags?

We're quite good now, I take bags if I know I'm going to shop, but sometimes I'm 'caught short', decide to pop to the shops on my way back from somewhere. We really need to keep a couple of bags in each car.

I have acquired so many "bags for life" they really will last me for ever!

I have been using my own bags for many years. I think it is great now, people don't look at me as though I am daft anymore. I very rarely see anyone else using their own bags or re-usable ones. I can't believe it when I still see people taking 10 bags for their shopping in the supermarket. In most other shops they now ask me if I would like a bag and unless it is something unusual I say no. The shops that don't ask me I usually say I don't want one and they don't give me a funny look like they used to.

Sort of 50/50 for me, sheds. I feel very pleased with myself if I remember to take one or more of my own, but I have a kitchen bin that uses plastic carrier bags so if I do have to get them from the shop at least I know that I am recycling them! I did once pick up someone else's shoping by mistake. I ended up with a pork pie, a copy of the Mirror, and a bumper pack of Tunes cough sweets, while the other person got my Ecover washing up liquid, a copy of CL, and a giant pack of jumbo oats. I wonder whose turned out to be more useful?

Most definitely your bag Jazz!
I also use my own bags for quite a while now. It has become second nature now, and I very rarely forget to take it along. If I do, I will buy some, and put it in the recycle bin afterwards. xx

I have been using my own bags for some considerable time, so I am well into the habit. I have all sorts, wax cotton, plain 'heavy' cotton, hessian/jute etc. And lovely, big, sturdy wicker baskets. I've even got some mini tub trugs for going to get vegetables that might have earth on them.

I don't even accept bags in clothing shops now. I have a nylon bag that folds up into its own pocket and I leave that in my handbag so that if I do buy clothing I have a nice, clean bag to take it home in.

Here's how I got into the habit, for it does take effort to break it.

1. Stuff a carrier bag into the pocket of whatever coat/coats you wear to go shopping, then you will always have at least one
2. Find a convenient place near your coat rack to hang your carriers
3. If all else fails, punish yourself by refusing to take the shopping if you need a carrier. You will soon learn not to forget using this one, which worked well for me!

I'm getting quite good at remembering to take my bags. I've got several fail safe methods.
* I hang my string bags on a hook in the kitchen (which is where I tend to compile the shopping list)
*I purchased two zip up calico bags which fit perfectly into my handbag.
*I've been collecting vintage shopping baskets for years, so I have a plentiful supply.
*I always keep a ridiculous number of bags in my carboot
*I tend to shop where they don't use/offer bags.
I am also encouraged that my children also remind me if they think we might need a bag /basket, when we go for a walk. I guess I'm just a 'bag' lady at heart!

This morning I bought some rolls, and they put it in a white paper bag, but unfortunately the bags tear very very easily. It wasn't always like this, presumably because the paper bags are now manufactured from recycled material which I think makes it less strong. Do yo find the same happening? xx
