Hi, If you lived in a 70's built house.....no chimney, also now no central heating, how would you heat the house? Electric? Gas? Calor gas?

Apparently the price of electricity is much more competitive now, so off peak storage heaters might be the answer.

I have been thinking about this a lot recently, franbee, as we think that we may end up moving into a 1960s or 70s house. I think that 1970s houses are probably better at containing heat than older houses. First, I would make sure that the loft, floors and any wall cavities have the highest level of insulation possible. Then I would install well fitting internal shutters on the big windows. I would ideally go for solar panels and electric heating, either radiators or underfloor, to generate my own background heating and keep costs down. And then top this up with a couple of movable calor gas heaters. This is just my pondering at the moment, but I think that not letting heat escape, generating your own low level background heating, with an extra blast when needed should fit most people's lives.
