Just discussing with OH what to do during my half term week off. He takes very little holiday (we had a week in Scotland this summer and 4 days in Brussels at Easter, but that's all) so needs a break and I thought it would be nice to get the Eurostar (I hate flying) to Belgium again and go either to Bruges or Antwerp for a few days. He says he wants a "chill out" break - time to sleep/read/walk (?) (he means read and sleep)and to be fair, as we get older we are less inclined to dash round European cities on short breaks.Money is also not in enormous supply. Trouble is, if I am at home it isn't really a break! He works away from home so coming home for the weekend is a change of scene for him, but selfishly perhaps, I feel I see quite enough of the place. And it's a long hard slog until Christmas - so ..... what I am suggesting is that we have a weekend away first, then spend the rest of the week at home BUT go out for days, eat out and I do NOT do domestic chores!! Fair enough?
But what do you like to do on a break? Do you like to see new places? Or is it a case of East West home's best?

I am not a great one for going away, I am quite happy chilling out at home with just a few day trips. I am happy in the garden or sewing or other hobbies but like you Souter girl I don't do chores and we eat out a lot. We had a week off last week and oh did decorating for 3 days while I was in the garden then we had a day at Stamford, a day at the black country museum and a day walking around Market Bosworth. The trouble is oh has a stressful job and I worry if he doesn't have a proper break, decorating is no holiday and neither is driving for a few hours to visit places. I am going to book at nice relaxing holiday abroad, hopefully in the sun, for early next year.

Hi, what about doing a bit of each SG? Go away for a few days, and then spend the rest at home, perhaps see some lovely places near home or something like that? x

SG,
We do both in some measure. in recent years illness has precluded booking holidays abroad but we have had short breaks in interesting places in England: Ironbridge, York, Beadnell, NorthLeach, hay on Wye, New Forest etc.

We tend to be too lazy if we stay at home and planned trips don't happen because something like waiting for a farrier will interfere, whereas if we are away from home we are comitted to the plans.

having said that, we are going to a horse fair in Portugal in November - our first trip abroad for about 3 years.

Thanks for all your comments - I wonder if OH has lost confidence in going away as last year we had to cancel or curtail 4 trips away as OH finished up back in hospital! I have decided to keep him happy and let him have his week at home to recharge his batteries, but we will be eating out lots, going for nice walks in Salcey Forest or Stowe Gardens if the weather is reasonable and he has promised to make it up to me in the future!!!

There you go then SG, all sorted and how lovely it sounds as well! One can have a holiday at home it seems. Enjoy! Keep us posted of all the nice walks and eats! xxx

i think theres nothing nicer than a weekend away in a hotel in G.B.being looked after.we usually pick a hotel with a health spa.not a really expensive one, just a decent hotel.it is surprising how just a week end away helps recharge the batteries.if your hotel room has a jacuzzi bath to ,well that is a right relaxing thing in itself.
