Not sure if this should go in Green and Ethical, but it is about a book, so I'm putting it here.

Has anyone read "Cod" by Mark Kurlansky?

It is not the sort of book I would ordinarily select for myself, but it is the November selection of the month for my Reading Group in the village. As it has managed to arrive before "The Tenderness of Wolves" which is the October selection I have started to read it.

It is amazing. Not dry or (at least so far) so full of boring facts that it makes you want give it to your worst enemy, No, it is well written and the 'facts' are presented in such a way that you don't realise it!

Of course, I am only a short way in to it and my opinion could change, but so far so good.

Only hope the October selection arrives soon so I can read and analyse that in time! :o

Cod is proving to be a most fascinating read, almost 'unputdownable' and I am amazed at what I am learning, not only about the history of this remarkable fish, but how we have managed to decimate the stocks of a fish that breeds so prolifically that it was once said that if all eggs laid in one year survived that three years later you could walk across the Atlantic on the backs of all the cod!

Rustic,

I shall have to look out for Cod, it sounds interesting. I have read the Tenderness of Wolves and would like to know what you make of it.

Well, Tenderness of Wolves arrived yesterday, and I really should be reading it, but I am so engrossed in Cod that I will have to finish it first now! Tried the first few pages of Tenderness of Wolves and I am not sure I am going to like it. These are the joys of a Reading Club.

I'm sure this is the book that was serialised on the radio a few years ago and describes the history of fishing for cod in Nova Scotia? If it is the one, I've been keen to read it but had no note of the title or author. I hope it is this one, as it sounded good on the radio and your recommendation has further 'whetted' my appetite.

As I suspected, I am now a couple of days in and I cannot get past the first few pages of Tenderness of Wolves. Oh, dear, how am I supposed to intelligently discuss?
