My living room carpet has been down for a number of years . Not at all worn but would like to freshen up with something nice smelling. I know there are things on the market like shake and vac but can't use these as they cause me to be short of breath . can you give me any other remedies please.

The traditional cleaner was 'salt and soda' solution, but that would have to be done on hands and knees. That proceedure is known as 'fluffing'.

To do that I would definately have to borrow your husband Fran .

Having only recently learned what "fluffing" means in another context, I can only say I am shocked, Dinger!! Wash your mouth out!!!

I think they used to freshen carpets with tea leaves sprinkled on the carpet then swept up, don't know if hoovering does the same. I can't imagine how that works, I would think it leaves brown stains. I saw it on the programme 'The Victorian House'

Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet every two weeks before vacuuming, this will keep it fresh as well Dinger. xx
