Humble Pie comes from the word umble and was originally made with 'umbles' or intestines and offal, such as tripe, heart, liver etc. of cow, deer or boar.

The word umble itself originates in the French word 'numble' for the innards of a deer, and was considered inferior food to be eaten only by the lower classes.

Don't think I would want to make it even if I had a recipe and wasn't a vegetarian! lol.

Hi Pumpkin you beat me to it !

Not a recipe to share ! Although when I googled it apparently Samuel Pepys mentioned several times in his diary that he ate 'umbles' [the 'n' at the beginning of the word was dropped]

He was known for his appetite [food and women] so it couldn't have tasted that bad.

The association with 'humble' is probably because it was eaten by the lower 'classes'.
