Heritage open days are a weekend in September when all over the country interesting buildings open free of charge, so you can go and look round. There's all sorts of places, lots of Churches, Town Halls, Masonic Halls, Museums etc. If you Google you can find places in your area, or indeed anywhere else you fancy going, with opening times.Well worth lining a few up. The first year I did about 4 each day, Town Hall, Masonic Hall, RC Church, a couple of local Churches I had never been in. This year they have included the newly built Mosque, I might go and have a nosey at that.

coincidence - I'd never heard of heritage days, but this morning I picked up a leaflet in the library about it in this area. Well, this county. My only gripe is the leaflet gives details of how to get there by car, but no details of public transport. I'm about to email the address on the leaflet for more information.
Some of the old churches mentioned are bristling with history, so I'm quite excited (I haven't lived here so very long, and didn't realise there was so much to see). And all free of charge! A real find.
