Sadly Pattie my hen has passed away. She was getting better but obviously not enough. We went out for 10 mins and when we came back I found her on her side on the lawn with her eyes closed.

I am so so so sad right now :( I loved her so much, such a lovely hen :(

Oola,I have only just seen this,I'm so sorry, you always taken such care of your chooks it seems so unfair that you have had so much illness etc with them.Big hugs to you,and I hope sometime you can give some more chooks a good home when you are ready to.

Can I add my sympathy, Oola? We do love our animals (?birds) and it is heart-breaking when they go, but you gave her a good life and if there is a chook-shaped space that needs filling in time, you will give another chook a good life too. Short of owning a galapagos turtle, there is no answer to the heart-break of losing a pet, but it's worth it for the joy they bring us.

Thank you all :) I was quite teary this morning but have tried to be philosophical about it - Pattie is ok now and not suffering, and she had a good life and there was nothing more I could do for her.

We are now down to 2 hens - one is still ill with a condition and we don't know how long she has, so we've decided that it's the best time to introduce two more ex-batt refugees. Maureen now sleeps in the henhouse on her own, as Yoko comes indoors in her makeshift carrier, so we think she needs some buddies. Cyn and Pattie had such good lives and it would be silly of me to feel guilty, as I'm not replacing them. I'm just giving two more chooks a good retirement. Rich is happy to do this, we're hoping though this time that perhaps we won't be so unlucky with the illnesses coming so soon.

RIP Pattie x

Sorry to hear about Patti.
You've had rough time lately with your animals haven't you.
Every time we lost a cat over the 29 years we've been married I've said the same thing. 'I'm not going to let my heart get broken again.'
But of course we have let another cat into our hearts.

What a lovely chicken she was. Really characterful. When your heart feels less sore you'll be able to enjoy your photos and remember all those fun moments when Patti was living a healthy chook life. :)
