My snowball turnips that I trialled this year are growing very well. Today I harvested a couple, but I'm not quite sure what I want to do with them. I was going to use them tonight in a soup (just chuck any old veg in with veg stock, cracked black pepper, potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic & peas, add a dash of cayenne pepper and salt and boil into oblivion), but it seems pretty unimaginative to do that!

Any ideas of how I can spice it up a bit (there's an idea...curried turnips?) and use them in a more interesting way? I've got two rows of turnips to get through you see!

Haven't tried it but here's a chinese inspired idea from Madhur Jaffrey's book 'World Vegetarian' published by Ebury press - it's great book, well worth getting.

Turnips braised with sugar and soy sauce - Madhur says goes well with dark greens, pulses and rice.

2 tablespoons groundnut or other vegetable oil
2lb turnips peeled and cut into 4cm cubes
250ml vegetable stock
2 tablespoons tamari or other soy sauce
1 tablespoon caster sugar
half a teaspoon sesame oil

heat oil, add turnips and stir fry over medium heat until light brown all over for about 5 minutes. |Add stock, soy sauce and sugar, bring to boil and simmer 15 minutes or until turnips tender. Turn then over now and then to colour them evenly. Sprinkle the sesame oil over the top and toss them then serve. I thought some toasted sesame seeds might work instead of the oil to add some crunch.

I add turnips to casseroles, but I love them roasted with other root vegetables
