View Full Version : Knitters Needed for Romanian Orphanage Charity
My mum's best friend has a sister in law who is involved in a charity that helps Romanian Orphanages. I was asked to knit a scarf for them, which I will be doing (if it's good enough).
But before I started I wondered if anyone else would be interested in knitting some scarves for them? I may be completely wrong, but as far as I know, the scarves are either sent directly out to Romania, or sold and the money put towards the charity's work. I will find out for sure.
You could knit the scarf and send it to me, and I will then pass them on. I think they have a standard size that they want, size 7 needles and a particular wool ply. Again, I'll find out the definite details and the name of the charity for everyone interested. Reply on this thread and let me know if you're interested at all :)
Just bumping this message up.

Oola, I've got several things on the go at the mo, but in August when my kids go back to college I'll have a lot more time on my hands.
They just need a simple knit stitch scarf, very easy and straightforward otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it! :)

Hi Oola
I can knit OK and would be happy to do a scarf or two (or three) and I should have some free time about September. With size 7 needles I take it the wool will be quite thick - like Aran maybe? Perhaps it would be helpful if you gave dimensions for the scarves and maybe we can use any cheap-ish wool we come across?
Kind regards - hope your back is improving?

Hi Oola, would love to help, will also be available late August/September to start knitting again. Let me know the dimensions and how long it should be and what type of wool you would like us to use.
Happy to help. Might be a good time to see what yarn is reduced in the shops. Charity shops always a good bet too, esp as the yarn doesn't have to be exactly the same for scarves. If too thin, double it, or if too thick, wrap it twice around the needle for each stitch, allowing the extra loop to drop off when you do the next row. Can create lovely effects. One of my favourite patterns for a scarf is to work as if doing a double rib (k2,p2,k2,p2etc) , but, every other row, move the rib sideways (k3,p2,k2,p2,etc) (hope this makes sense).
Sometimes better to join with a tight knot in scarves, rather than at the beginning as you would normally.
Let us know how we get the scarves to you or to the charity.

Would be happy to do some scarves OOla, please post the instructions or sizes.
I offered to knit for the chinobel children a few years ago and asked for donations of wool. I had that much that I did over 30 jumpers for the teenagers on my knitting machine. It was very satisfying knowing that you were helping those poor children.
OK I have spoken to my Mum. She says that there is no specific size - the needles I was told to use was because my Mum's best friend was going to give me some wool to knit with, which obv. needed certain sized needles.
Apparently though there is a cut-off date as to when the scarves need knitting by, as the lady is actually going out to Romania to deliver them. Mum is going to find out when, and I will post to let everyone know. Thanks to everyone that has shown an interest thus far!

Oola I have just had a thought. It might be more expensive to post the scarves to you than they are worth so we would be better giving you a donation than wasting money on postage. I will find out how much it will cost.
I spoke to Mum again tonight and she said that the scarves will either be sold in Cambridgeshire (I think) and the money goes towards the charity, or they will be taken straight out to Romania. I don't actually know the name of the charity and Mum has asked, and her best friend (who's sister in law is working for them) doesn't know the name either! She's just doing the scarves and sending them to her SIL as and when needed. Sorry I couldn't find any more info.
Anyway let me know if you're still interested, apparently any sort of scarf will do.

Oola I haven't knitted in years but would be happy to have a go!! think size 7 needles and double knitting wool would be about right. X
Someone is asking, in our parish magazine, for woolly hats for orphans and street children in Arad, Romania, for a charity called 'Pro Prietenia' - 'The Friendship Foundation'. I wonder if this is the same charity?
Taking Dragonfly's point about postage, perhaps we could all look to see if someone local is collecting.
Just thought I'd mention that, if we are talking about metric needle sizes, size 7mm, mentioned earlier, would knit a rather loose scarf with double knit. 4mm is more usual for double knit, although, to get the scarf to 'drape' you could go up to 5mm.

love to give it a try if you send out the details...not a great deal of spare time to knit but usually if it is for someone else, I can get it done...
