Is anyone else out there struggling to get or stay connected to the net? This evening I am so frustrated by trying to get and stay on line that if it wasn't for wanting to chat with all of you I would pick the computer up and throw it out of the window!

Broadband is impossible here because our telephone line is so awful. My local councillor is trying to get funding for wireless broadband but that seems to be taking forever. BT are simply not interested unless I pay them huge amounts of money to replace the line! I am sick of hearing about all the wonderful things you can do on line these days - not on Dial-up you can't!

Thank you for listening!! I am off now to have a large drink and bang my head against the nearest wall!

Sorry about your technical problems Sheepy, this modern stuff isn't always all it's cracked up to be. Enjoy the drink but use a cushion instead of the wall. Fran.

Sound advice, you two!

Horror of horror, no booze in the house, anyway! We really only buy the stuff at Christmas, so the cupboard is bare!

........and the problem is, one gets so used to this computor that it's like a nightmare without it! We were of line the whole of Tuesday, and goodness, what a frustrating day! Some advice though, rather go outside, take a few deep breaths of crisp fresh air and the head will be spared! Sympathy from me to you!

Hi Sheepy,
we used to live in a remote village, only got broadband when they changed the thresholds in later years.
We were too far from the exchange as I expect you are.
Our electricity came for over 5 miles on little wooden poles.
We found that the computer would seize up, as would the SKY TV box, and the freeview.
What was happening was that under some weather condition, sometimes damp misty, other times windy electrical stormy stuff, and even when the frosts came, we were experiencing what they call PLD (power line disturbance), which is electrical noise coming alone the mains and down the phone line.
Our solution was to get one of those mains extension leads with filters and surge protectors, and fit it to both the mains for the computer/modem and the phone line.
It helped, but I still knew when a storm was coming...

I used to have broadband at the place I rented when I first lived with Rich. Everytime it rained a moderate amount the connection would die.

Just a thought, probably not got anything to do with broadband issues, but I got a new laptop this week. It has Vista rather rather Windows XP as with my old one. I have been having a few problems with the screen freezing and I've posted three or four messages and whenevever I've hit submit reply, the message and page has disappeared and I get 'internet cannot display webpage'. I asked my OH when he got back yesterday, he too has found similar problems with Vista.

It might be your Internet connection - are you on a wireless network?

We are on wireless, oH travels so he's on all different wireless connections, still getting used to it so maybe it will work itself out.

yeah our wireless connection would occasionally just drop for no apparent reason...hopefully as you say it'll iron itself out.

we have satellite broadband. Our govt. made it available in areas that could not receive any other broadband. We receive equipment and set up usually costing around $3000 free. It is usually pretty good, sometimes the weather affects it.

When I put the WiFi in here it was fine to begin with, worked good all over the house and in the workshop out the back.
Then it started playing up, the range was very poor, if I moved to another room it just disappeared.
I found that when I looked for the connection on the windows "connect to a network" screen I found some new networks had appeared.
The nieghbours had installed WiFi.
I then checked with a different software and found we were all trying to use the same channel.
Both the others appear to be "SKY" and their default is channel 6, and I had put mine on channel 6 as it was in the middle.
I moved myself to another channel and got my range back and the WiFi side is now good.

Before anyone asks, we are all encrypted, so I cannot see what they are up to or use their connections.

We're on cable and airport (which is WiFi) within the house. It all works fine apart from when some nearby builders damaged the cable and we were without Internet for half a day last week. At least it doesn't suffer from the weather.
