Buddy List / Quick Links

OK I admit it - I'm clueless, so can some kind soul please explain what exactly the Buddy List is and what it's used for?. Also I just clicked Quick Links to send a message and it keeps changing to Buddy List. It hasn't done this before.

The buddy list's use, as far as I am aware, extends to things like the blog. If you want to keep your blog private, you can make it only available to people on your buddy list. You can add whoever you want to your buddy list manually in 'My Control Panel'.
