As part of the wider 'grand plan' that is happening in my life that I have been talking about on the thread over in the business section of this site, I am placing my lovely little terraced house up for sale to release the equity that is in there. I have had this house for 5 years and it has seen me through good and bad. I spent a couple of years there as a single girl and it really did make me feel safe, then OH moved in with me and then finally I have had a friend living in there for the past year and a half. My friend moves out tomorrow and then OH and I are going in there to redecorate and so it is going on the market. I really hope that it sells in this declining market. As the property will be completely empty, do you think that it would be worth putting some furniture in there to show it off. It is very small and there can be no misunderstanding as to what each room is for and I do tend to think that furniture could make it look smaller whereas empty rooms look larger. What do you think?

Hi treehugger, your house sounds lovely and I'm sure that it will make a nice home for somebody. Where is it, if you don't mind me asking? I am in the same position and my house has just gone on the market, so hopefully a buyer will come along soon. I asked Oola about the possibility of putting a small ad with a link to the estate agent's web page on the RM front page and she is open to this idea, so maybe you might liek to consider the same?
With regard to furniture, I think that a house looks more like a home if it has some in, but not too much - just enough to show that a person could live there comfortably. So, a few nice-ish pieces from your own collection that you think gives the flavour of the house. Good luck, and I hope that your house, and mine, sell in the current supposedly declining market.

Hi Jazz, the house is in Lancaster in a nice area with open fields and allotments at the end of the street. My tenant moved out last night so OH and I went round to have a look at what would need doing and I was absolutely mortified when I went in there. The place absolutely stank. It was filthy. The beech block work surface in the kitchen is ruined and will have to be replaced. There is mould crawling up the walls in the bathroom, the floor in the bathroom will have to be replaced as God knows what she has done in there. I literally stood in the dining room and wept for my poor house. OH was much more practical as he is a joiner so he said not to worry as we will soon have everything sorted. I am just bewildered though at how someone could live like that and have no care for their environment.

Is that Scotforth, TH? I was brought up in Lancaster. Mum lived on Dorrington Rd til she died a couple of years ago, now son has her house.

I really like Lancaster, treehugger, and my OH is already planning his next literature development move there, as there is quite a thriving literature team and a new arts building being built! He loves his new job in the Lake District, but you always have to keep your eye open...
What a shame that your tenant left the house in such a mess. You do wonder what some people actually do in what is their home. At least your partner is a joiner, so it might be fairly easy to sort out. A good clean can also make everything look much better. Good luck with putting yours on the market.

My house is in an area known as 'Fairfield' in Lancaster. It's a lovely area and OH and I love Lancaster as well. It's really vibrant little city and OH is right to plan his next literature move there as, what with the university and the amount of academics in the city, it would be well received. OH and I have been in the house all day today, scrubbing, cleaning and decorating. The place is beginning to come back to its former glory! Poor thing, if I could have done, I would have hugged the house!

Franbee, I'm not familiar with Scotforth. It's a lovely area, but at the other end of town to me. Will look out for Dorrington road on my travels.

Hi TH, I know Fairfield well enough, it is very nice, but then so is most of Lancaster. Dorrington Rd backs onto the railway, so you won't pass it normally.
