After a pretty traumatic transplantation (one of the main roots was broken after it had rooted through the large pot) three or four years ago, my fig tree has finally produced a few decent sized fruits. We sunk it in the pot into the ground, but in the last three years it has struggled to produce anything noteworthy.

Now it seems it has finally settled in, and I'd love to do something with the fruit this year. Any ideas?

Wow! Oola, you are so lucky. Figs are one of my favourite fruits. I prefer them fresh and raw, but last Christmas I bought a jar of whole small figs preserved in light almond liquer syrup. They tasted so lovely, still fresh and the combination of flavours was very mediterranean in the middle of winter.

I love slicing an X in the top, pouring in a little honey, popping them in the oven on low for about 10 mins or so, then pop some Green and Blacks Vanilla ice cream in the top and enjoy! I love serving them with baked bananas. Yum!

I bought a fig tree from J Parkers in Feb, which is about the size of a twig but has flourished over the last month - what with all the rain! - and now has a little fig growing. So excited! Figs are so hardy - well done for keeping yours alive.

OOohhhh baked bananas, sounds excellent. And who can resist green & black's ice cream? My fave is caramel and hazelnut - so very VERY tasty. I will give it a whirl whn the figs are ripe :)

Pop the bananas under the grill, wait til the skins blacken and start to split, then add a hint of cinnamon or sugar, or just stick to ice cream!
