Wow, hasn't the cost of moving house gone up in the past five years? Yesterday, Andy and I went to look at a potential rental near Kendal. It is a lovely cottage and just right for us, but if we want to secure it then we will need to rent it now before we have sold our own house! Also, there will be 6 week's rent as a deposit and an administration fee of £120 each to process our application. I have also been checking out the cost of removal firms, and for an average house like ours, with lots of books, the prices quoted were around £1500. When we moved here it only cost about £300 from one of the biggest firms. Do you think that this sounds reasonable? Also, do you think that it is the case that because house prices have increased such a lot in recent years that related businesses have also just put their prices up dramatically?

Then there is stamp duty when you buy not to mention HIP report when selling. These can cost several hundreds and if you don't sell quickly the searches need to be renewed. I imagine removal costs will go up as the number of house sales falls, so removal firms don't lose too much income.
