OK Ladies (and gents), if someone pushed a £20 note in your hand, and gave you the morning to spend it, where would you head to first? I'd make a beeline for a second hand bookshop, or charity shop with china, followed by a cup of coffee with a friend.

Mmmm, might have to have the coffee first to think about it... I'm not used to unplanned spending! Fran.

I would also go to second hand bookshops and charity shops first, and then coffee to peruse my spends.

I would be off to the nearest car boot sale.

Ladies, it sounds like we need to organise a day out together (forget the fact that we are scattered around the planet!). We will have to promise in advance not to fight over the same books/clothes/china though. As we all appear to have the collector gene, what would y'all go for first? I like unusual vases, ornamental sparrows and quirky earrings, followed by anything that is Size 20 that doesn't look hideous:-)

I look for bits of jewellry, or white china with pink and/or green sprigs on. I also always look at shoes, have had quite a few pairs from bric-a-brac. Fran.

apart from books, I will probably look for a Welsh traditional ring, a gothic stone mirror, a
pewter quaich.

Definitely a trip to my favourite antique shop/flea market, unless I were in the UK at the time, in which case it would be head for the nearest bookshop

Crocus,what is a pewter quaich?
I too would go to a charity shop to look for both clothes and books, and then maybe go for a bowl of soup with my OH. Our local Oxfam hop has the most incredible book department and all very well organised,I often go in for a browse around there are bargains a plenty there.

Off down the garden centre for me with my £20 to buy a permanent plant for the garden and a couple of pretty plants in flower. Then, it would be off to the wool and fabric shop to pick up a bargain to make something handy.

At the moment everything is going towards my daughters blessing this coming Saturday, but if if i did not have that I would go and buy some books as I read so much over the winter months, or I would go and buy some wool for my knitting.

Hi Kate, its a Scottish bowl or cup with two handles and mostly used for drinking whisky. I think it comes from the Scottish Gaelic word for cup "quach". We were at the Famous Grouse Whisky Distillery near Crieff up in Scotland (was Glenturret Whisky Distillery and is the oldest distillery in Scotland). In their shop they sell these quaiches and up till today I'm still annoyed with myself that I didn't buy one for hubbys birthday! Someday when I get to go there again, I'll do just that!

Hi Crocus, how lovely,a whisky cup with two handles, sounds very civilised! Thanks for the explanation ;my husband used to enjoy a scotch and Famous Grouse was a great favourite, but he's not able to have alchohol any more, more's the pity.

Quite civilised as you say! Whether it is still being used to drink whisky, I don't know. But it seems that in days gone by, it may have been the custom..Perhaps the knowledgable amongst us can enlighten us?

I would change it to two ten pound notes, give one to my husband and the other I would buy myself - depending on the time of year - either some nice British grown flowers, or visit a M&S foodhall, or a secondhand bookshop. Though with seventy books in a bookcase in the bedroom waiting to be read, I think I should try and avoid such places for now!
