Taken from my Mum's recipe book started in 1937.

1lb plain flour
1/2 lb Margarine or butter
1/2 lb caster sugar
1/2 lb sultanas
1/4lb raisins
2teasp. soda bicarb.
2 tsp mixed spice
1 cup milk
1 wineglass (small) vinegar.

Mix all dry ingredients together, put bicarb in milk to dissolve, pour over the dry mixture, lastly add the vinegar.Mix all together and bake 1 1/2 hours in a moderate oven.

When I have made this ,I use a loaf tin,and if the mixture seems a bit dry when everything is in,add a little more milk. Although she hasn't put this in the instructions, you cream the butter/marg.and sugar before adding the rest of the ingredients. Nice on it's own or with butter on!
